The 1951 Initiative is on a mission to turn our vision into reality, but we can't do it alone. We need your support to make a lasting impact in the lives of individuals seeking addiction recovery services. The next crucial phase of our journey is to raise the necessary funding through donations and grants, allowing us to establish a dedicated facility and assemble a qualified staff.
Hi, I am Angie Thompson, founder and CEO of The 1951 Initiative, and my journey and experiences have shaped the mission and purpose of The 1951. Growing up with my father's alcoholism deeply impacted me and my family. To the outside world, he appeared as a functional and responsible member of society, living the quintessential middle-American suburban life. However, the devastating impact of alcohol on his physical and mental health cast a heavy shadow over the family.
Dad faced his first health crisis related to alcoholism at the age of 42, when pancreatitis struck. The years of pleading and urging him to break free from the grip of alcoholism exacted a toll on the entire family. From pancreatitis to cirrhosis of the liver, internal bleeding, a weakened immune system, and ultimately a leg amputation due to infection, his journey highlighted the severe toll of long-term alcohol abuse. It reinforced the devastating impact that addiction can have on individuals and their loved ones.
Despite the challenges, my parents' enduring commitment to each other served as a powerful example of dedication. When my father passed away in 2016, it became evident that the damage caused by alcohol had contributed to his health complications. His passing emphasized the urgency of addressing addiction and providing comprehensive support to those in need.
The year 1951 holds a personal significance as it represents the year my father was born. It symbolizes his importance in my life and the inspiration behind The 1951 Initiative, which aims to offer assistance and guidance to others struggling with addiction.
My own journey wasn't without its challenges. Growing up in an environment where alcohol was deeply ingrained in everyday life, I too turned to alcohol as a way to numb emotional trauma. In a culture where alcohol has become excessively normalized, I believe my experiences are relatable to those who have turned to it as a coping mechanism. Social gatherings frequently centered around "drinks," and what initially seemed like innocent activities like a "Wednesday Night Wine Walk" gradually evolved into a recurring pattern of "Thirsty Thursday" and "Sunday Funday"...and then it became any day that ended in "y".
A profound spiritual awakening prompted me to see life in a new light. Determined not to follow dads same path of destruction, my mission was to shield my children from the pain I endured. The spark of The 1951 Initiative was ignited with the goal of breaking the cycle of addiction, fostering healing, and providing a supportive community for those seeking recovery.
Thankfully, along my journey, I have been fortunate to cross paths with incredible and supportive individuals who share the same passion for addiction recovery. These amazing people have played a pivotal role in shaping the ideas and vision behind The 1951 Initiative. Their unwavering support, dedication, and expertise have been invaluable in bringing this wonderful idea to fruition.
Through our collective wisdom and experiences, belief in our mission and willingness to contribute our time, resources, and skills, we are a united front. We are dedicated to creating a nurturing and transformative environment where individuals can find healing, restoration, and a renewed sense of purpose. The collaborative spirit continues to inspire and propel The 1951 Initiative forward, allowing us to make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve.
